To twenty-something actor TJ Trinidad applies the saying "it's better late than never." Unlike most TV or movie personalities nowadays who jumped into showbiz while still in their puberty, TJ had to sacrifice his dream of becoming an actor for his parents' dream of him finishing college.
In 1999, he graduated with a Marketing degree from La Salle University. But instead of pursuing a showbiz career, he opted to work in the business sector. He first became a Money Market Trader with All Asia Capital, then he left for the United States after a year or so to be a trader. When he came back, he joined a star-up company called E-Pay which was involved in electronic prepaid cards distribution. Unfortunately, the company closed.
When he was left jobless, he took this as a sign to take his first step towards show business.
"I wouldn't go so far just to say that I was miserable working," explained TJ. "I enjoyed it except that acting is really something I wanted to do for a long time. So when the company closed, I told myself that I might as well do it now because you only have one life to live and might as well live your dream when you can!"
Clueless as to how he will join showbiz, he called family friend Edu Manzano for advice. He told him that he wanted to be an actor and didnt know what to do. Edu then introduced TJ to his manager June Torrejon and as the saying goes, the rest is history.
En route to his first year in tinseltown, TJ is one of the few lucky ones given good breaks in so short a time. He immediately was hired to appear in the soap opera 'Basta't Kasama Kita' with Robin Padilla and Golden Screen Awards Best Supporting Actress Judy Ann Santos a year ago. And to top it all, he even played the love interest of Juday!
When "Basta't Kasama Kita" started, TJ's role was that of the best friend of Juday's character Princess. He was secretly in love with her. Then as the series progressed, both their character's slowly became emotionally involved with each other. And at the moment, all of "Basta't Kasama Kita" aficionados are awaiting to know if they would get married to each other. In fact, the TJ-Juday team up has slowly earned a following.
As Judy Ann commented about the actor during the press conference of their upcoming movie "I Will Survive," "We both have a good working relationship. He is hard working. But I dont want to say that we are going to be a love team kasi sa edad naming hindi na yata puwede yun. But he is okay as an actor."
For TJ, learning that he was accepted for a role in "Basta't Kasama Kita" was his first personal feat in showbiz.
"I was very happy. I thank God everyday for what I have received and for the blessings I'm getting. Im also grateful to ABS-CBN and my directors because I auditioned to my directors, and this was a big break for me. I am just happy that I'm now working as an actor."'
He added that he was in awe when he started shooting for the drama-action series.
"Siyempre I was starstruck. I would not deny that. Honestly, it took me a few months to get settled in. So far it didn't affect my acting because I was really shy for my own good. Finally when I got comfortable everything fell on its place."
Though his acting workshops happened when he was 10 years old when he started doing commercials, his other acting experience was with Antioch Alabang wherein he appeared in plays produced to raise funds for charity causes. Other than that, his entry into showbiz as he described was 'taking the plunge!'
Another break for the aspiring actor was a role in the dark-comedy "Keka" with VIVA Hot Babe Katya Santos. He displayed an acting prowess as one of the fraternity members responsible for the death of Katya Santos' character's boyfriend. It was another experience he will never forget.
The latest challenge for TJ Trinidad was working in Joel Lamangan's "I Will Survive", which is the Mother's Day presentation of Regal Entertainment.
In the film, he plays Judy Ann's husband who is also an Overseas Filipino Worker like her. And their dilemma according to the actor is their daughter who grew up with the grandparents and because of that doesn't recognize them as the parents. The other is his one-night stand in Australia that resulted in another child which his wife soon found out. Things gets complicated when the mother of his lovechild dies and leaves him the child to tend to.
"It's great to be part of such a lineup. What actor wouldn't want it? I only worked with Eric and Juday. Even then when I worked for the first time with Eric, he was fantastic! He is really a great actor. And he is driven. Im just happy to be part of this ensemble," he said with pride.
TJ Trinidad is already making a name for himself in television and soon in the movies. His goal is to last in the business and be able to work as long as he can. What he also loves about his work is the support he is getting from his parents who understood him perfectly well when he decided to become an actor.
"I mean I took a crack at working but at the back of my head I've always wanted to be an actor. And they told me to do what I want as long as I am happy."
Another advice he received from his parents is to always keep his feet on the ground.
"I make sure that I am grounded and in every performance I always give my best that is why I give 200% in every performance," remarked TJ.
According to him, nothing changed much in his life since he became a celebrity. Though his working hours have changed, he still remains the same TJ who always enjoys his family, friends and the usual things he does before.
Aware of the many intrigues that can befall any actor in showbiz, he lives with a practical principle in life. As he expounded "I have my faith. I believe in God and I'm always nice. Some people say bad things but I just take it with a grain of salt. There is so much hatred in this world, there's no more room for more. Dont mind it na lang."
With good looks and good personality, TJ Trinidad is your matinee idol ON THE RISE!
